How VA math works

Under 38 CFR § 4.25, ratings combine based on remaining efficiency, rather than simply adding percentages. For example, a 50% rating combined with 30% yields 65%, which rounds to a final 70% rating.

Under 38 CFR § 4.26, qualifying disabilities affecting paired upper or lower extremities receive a bilateral factor before the other ratings are combined. The calculator approximates the combined ratings table by rounding each table combination to the nearest whole number and rounding the final combined rating to the nearest 10.

Some ratings, such as disabilities evaluated under special combination rules, cannot be calculated reliably from percentages alone. VA also applies rules against pyramiding and special ratings not represented here. Verify the final award against your rating decision.
